This past Friday I attended my first ever “tweetup” at one of my favorite restaurants, BIN555.
{For my readers that aren’t into the social media scene, a “tweetup” is a gathering of like minded people who are connected via twitter}.
So yes, I met up with a bunch of virtual strangers for dinner. I was a little anxious about it, I’m not the most outgoing person in the world, and I wasn’t sure if everyone would know each other already. Would these people be freaks? Would they like me? I really didn’t know what to expect, but I put on my big girl cardigan and went anyway.
Had to look the part of The Waspy Redhead!
You know what, it was a great time. I met some lovely women, and made some great connections. My thoughts that the people might be freaks were immediately erased. It was a delightful group of women of all ages and backgrounds. We were all connected through mutual interests in social media, our community, good food and good times!
This #Tweetbabes event was organized by two lovely ladies, Colleen and Mey. I hadn’t met either of them prior to the event, but I’ve been following the both of them on twitter for a while now. We all gathered on the covered patio and were greeted with a custom menu just for our group!
I’m going to be spoiled and expect a custom menu everywhere I go now.
I started things off with a field greens salad in sherry vinaigrette with pickled stone fruits. Delicious!
Up next I had mini cherve grilled cheese sammys with sweet tomato marmalade. Amazing!
Though I was sated after my salad and sammys, I just HAD to try this next dish… It’s “popcorn grits”.
They start by making fresh popped corn, and then they instantly freeze it with liquid nitrogen. Then they pulverize it until it’s the texture of cornmeal. Then they reconstituted it with butter just like you would prepare grits. It looked like yellow corn grits, it had the texture of yellow corn grits… but it tasted EXACTLY LIKE POPCORN. So cool!
All in all it was a great evening. I met so many fabulous women that I can’t possibly list them all here – but if you’re interested in keeping up with our shenanigans you can follow the hashtag #tweetbabes.
Great recap post! I remember you at the table but didn’t get to actually meet you. Hopefully next time. I totally felt the same way, well almost I had met a few ladies just once (except for the wonderful Colleen). It’s reassurring to know I wasn’t the only one a bit anxious. Funny how much alike we (women, in general) are! … oh and why didn’t I get that popcorn thingy!?!
And you big girl cardigan was SO CUTE. I don’t think we officially met, as I was at the other end of the table from you, but I certainly noticed your great outfit. I wish I would have tasted those popcorn grits. Anything reconstituted in butter has got to be to die for. Hope to meet you officially at another tweetup in the future!
It was truly nice meeting you
thank you so much for the good conversation and for sharing your delightful recipes…I look forward to the next tweetup!
Thank you so much for coming! I really wanted to meet you in person! I am glad that you had a good time too
That looks great – I had the same type of mini grilled cheeses with tomato basil soup at a wedding in Wisconsin last week – yummy!
Aw love this post – so fun! And the popcorn grits sound interesting…
Hey, Little Niece–
I’m in Hawaii craving some popcorn grits!
Love your blog–the layout is fabulous–only thing is it makes me hungry!
Keep up the great work…
Love ya!
Thanks Mary Beth – it’s so great to hear from you!
