Happy Sunday Readers!
I don’t usually post over the weekends, but I wanted to bring attention to a new feature on my site, (especially for those of you who get my content via an RSS feed). And because I’m feeling generous there’s a giveaway at the end of this post!*
If you’ll glance on over to the right, you’ll see a box titled “A Delicious Reading List”. I’ve recently started listing and reviewing some of my favorite cookbooks and food writing using a site called Goodreads. I was first introduced to Goodreads by the lovely Maggie of Freckled Citizen, and I’ve so enjoyed using the site to help me keep track of my constantly growing reading pile. My appetite for reading is surpassed only by my appetite for food, and I’ll be using it to track more than cookbooks & food writing moving forward.
Here is a sample from my recent review of “Everyday Food: Great Food Fast”
I gave this cookbook 5 stars because of what a useful resource it has become for me. I’ve made many of the recipes, and each were successes. The companion television show on PBS is one of my favorite cooking shows as well. Hosted by a group of chefs (each are staffers for Everyday Food magazine) the show has the air of meticulous perfectionism that is inherent in everything Martha Stewart does. The recipes and approaches to meal planning, however, are completely lacking in pretension (which is not something I would say is inherently Martha).
This cookbook was a gift from my parents two Christmases ago. I asked for it after thumbing through my former roommate Marissa’s copy. (If you know me or Marissa personally, you will see the hilarity of this situation. In the 2 years we lived together, I think that a combined 10 meals or so were prepared by the both of us. We weren’t so much domestic goddesses). After gifting me the book, and enjoying some of the dishes I prepared from it my parents decided they liked the book so much, that they bought themselves a copy. Its a great cookbook. So great in fact, that I totally think that you – dear reader, need one too! So I’m going to give you one.
There are two ways to enter this contest:
- First, leave a comment on this post and tell me your favorite cookbook.
-For another chance to win you can sign up for Goodreads and send me a friend request. Here’s a link to my profile.
The contest will run from today till 5pm on Saturday February 6th. A winner will be selected using random.org. I will post the winner on Sunday, February 7th.
*Neither Martha Stewart , Goodreads, or anyone over at MSLO have sponsored this giveaway. They’re likely oblivious to the existence of The Waspy Redhead (which is a shame, because I’ve always thought that Martha and I would be besties if we were to meet). I’m providing this prize out of the goodness of my own heart.

I like your contests (and I’m a sucker for entering things). My favorite cookbook is The Silver Spoon. Big. Italian. Beautiful pictures. Well-organized. Used to be the gift every Italian bride-to-be received before getting married. Have you seen/read it?
I’ve had my eye on this cookbook for quite some time! I’m a total newbie cook (my mom’s secret recipe tomato sauce is simmering right now…crossing my fingers hoping I didn’t screw it up) — so far the only cookbook I own is Rick Bayless Mexican Everyday, so that would have to be my favorite.
Forty years ago when I married, I was given a copy of “The Joy of Cooking”, I still have the cookbook although the husband has since left my life. It is a great how to for any food question and holds up after all these years. “The Joy of Cooking” a must have for your cooking reference library.

Love your blog friend!
I’ve had my eye on this cookbook for a while. Heard great things!
I was already on goodreads and am just starting out too! I really like that site as well. This cookbook looks amazing because me and my roommate are just starting out learning how to cook and we are looking for a good cookbook with fast foods. This sounds like a great one. I’ll have to pick one up even if I don’t win.
Just wanted to say YAY for Goodreads and YAY for Great Food Fast… I won’t waste one of your entries because this is my most often-used cookbook too! I love it!
I think my favorite cookbooks are local Church cookbooks. They usually have great downhome recipes. I would really love a new cookbook though. Always looking for new cooking ideas.
Stop and smell the Rosemary by the Junior League of Houston. Great recipes and wonderful photography!
Does searching foodnetwork.com count as a favorite???
The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating
‘Skinny Bitch in the Kitch’. Easy vegan favoriates
can’t spell today – supposed to read favorites
i would say my favorite is Moosewood Cookbook Classics even though I don’t even own it!!
My all time favorite cookbook is the Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook…especially when I’m at my parents’ house and can use my mom’s 30 year old falling apart version!
Believe it or not, but my favorite cookbook is one my church compiled by different members’ favorite recipes. I absolutely love it and have used it so much that I have “cooking splatters” on it, ha!
This one looks so good, pictures – lovely! I always gravitate towards pictures at restaurants and always end up ordering something I can “see” as opposed to read, lol. I would LOVE this. It would bring back my love of cooking, I hope! Not that I don’t love it anymore, it’s just hard with 2 little ones running around (and a new puppy now too, hmph)!!!
There are so many “favorites,” but recently I keep turning to The Gourmet Cookbook, with its current twists on classic standards. I’ve been eyeing Good Food Fast; maybe this can be a Valentine’s treat for moi! Thanks, waspyredhead!!!!!
