If Loving These Is Wrong, I Don’t Want To Be Right.

by elizabeth on April 24, 2009

I’ve already mentioned that although I don’t have a green thumb at all, I’ve had great success with phalaenopsis orchids.  Though they have the reputation of being finicky, I haven’t found them to be high maintenance in the slightest.

orchid1I borrowed Steve’s digital SLR a few days ago to take these picks.  Thanks hon!  Really I’ve GOT to get a cool camera like that, it’s so much easier to take high quality picks with good equipment.

I’ve had this plant since November, and it’s still in full swing.  In fact, it just produced two more blooms this month.  I thought it was interesting that the petals of the newest flowers were a much darker magenta color.  I wonder if it’s because they developed in different light conditions than the previous blooms?  These petals are new to this old house, whereas the other flowers developed in my much darker apartment.  Maybe that is wackadoo logic.  I’ll stop pretending to be a botanist.

Recently Central Market had an orchid event in their floral department.  There were literally hundreds of orchid plants of different varieties for sale.  I picked up this beaut.

orchid2Welcome home lovely orchid!  I hope you like my sun room.

orchid4Here’s a close up.  Aren’t they delicate and romantic looking?  Its like a Georgia O’Keefe print come to life.

Don’t get me started on Georgia O’Keefe… Love her work, but I’m fairly certain that the print of Grey Line which hung above the fireplace in our formal dinning room set me up for years of therapy later in life.  But enough about that.  I’m just fine now.  :)

orchid3I think they compliment each other nicely.

One thing I thought was interesting is that one of the blooms on the new orchid has a patch of magenta.  It looks sort of like mother nature accidentally touched it with her paintbrush after adding the magenta detail in the center.

I’ve decided that if this orchid continues to thrive for a month or so… that I’ll think about getting another one.  Will that make me a crazy orchid lady?  Are orchids like cats?  Do I need to avoid a certain number of them in the home lest I be considered a creepy spinster?

Sweet Kathy sent the link and I’m loving it.
